We rent communication satellite devices and GPS navigational units for customers traveling to and from all over the world. One of the devices we rent, the SPOT Messenger, is also used as a "tracker" for competitive events on the water, such as yacht and schooner races, regattas, and canoe and kayak races. Whether for a 2-day event off the New England shore, or week-long event around the tip of Florida, our SPOT device offers a great way for race coordinators to be aware of each participant's position on the course, and to also detect if someone possibly needs assistance. For the participant, it offers the peace of mind of being able to seek assistance, even if outside of cell phone range.

Tracking for sailing race events using SPOT satellite unit

If you are entering a regatta or similar event as a participant, you can rent the device through our regular checkout, beginning at this link to the SPOT product description page. You can choose to use all of the SPOT features, or just the two things your race coordinator is going to want, which is the ESN (serial number), found inside the battery compartment; and, the unit's "Shared Page" URL feed, a web map page address that you create under your online profile. We'll send you the simple instructions on how to do setup the device how you want it, and see this informative video on using the SPOT while in a regatta or other race event. Keep in mind the SPOT requires a clean shot to the sky, so it won't work under the deck for example. Firmly mount it on the upper deck with the widest possible reception angle, and make sure it's on tight!

If you are a regatta organizer and are recommending or requiring your event participants to affix a tracker to their boat while on the course, then you can direct them to the link above to rent one from us, or, become our direct customer and you can distribute to participants under whatever arrangement works best for you - either add an additional fee or include in the total entry cost. If your goal is to be able to see the location of all racers on a single screen at the same time - we recommend you do so - then you'll need the services from a different company that has the specialized software. We don't offer that service, but we can direct you to a couple of providers that we work with - just give us a call. To see an example of how the rented SPOT devices are tracked as a group, see our explanatory video on using the SPOT as a race coordinator for a regatta.

Whether you wish to rent a single SPOT as a regatta skipper, or need to rent several dozen in bulk as an event organizer, feel free to give us a call for more information on how we can help.
