Tent - 1-Person Free-Standing for Backpacking

These tents are called "free-standing" as they do not require staking out at camp. To pull this off, free-standing tents have more pole structure and are often a bit heavier than tents that do require staking. The advantage is in the ease of setting up and finding a suitable place to set up your tent - a solid rock base is no big deal for a free-standing tent, but can be a pain with staked tents.

Most one-person tents have just enough room for a standard size mattress pad and some personal extras. Our non-free-standing tents do have more elbow room. If you want to share a tent with a friend or just want more room for yourself, check into renting a 2-person backpacking tent. If you are car camping where space and weight are not an issue rent a 2-person car camping tent instead.

These tents are rated as “Three-Season”, but with aerodynamic design and low profile should protect you just fine even in high, cold winds. Be sure to pitch the tent into the wind, not broad-side to it. Heavy snows could be a problem if allowed to stack up on top. If you find yourself in a heavy snow one night, you should get up every now and then and brush it off. A few inches shouldn’t hurt it.

We carry models from two manufacturers in this series – the MSR Hubba and the Sierra Designs Vapor Light. Both are two-wall tents: the tent body, which includes some mesh material on the walls for maximum ventilation, plus a waterproof fly cover that goes over the body for protection against rain and provides more insulation. Each has one door, and is very easy to setup. You can specify a preference if you have one at the time of order; if we don’t have it we’ll send you another model unless you say it’s THAT ONE or nothing.

Manufacturer Specs: (note: weight is as packaged; may be less in field. L/W dimensions are maximums at either side and may not be that long or wide the entire side of the tent, and may include the vestibule. The interior height listed is usually at just one peak point and will slope lower from there.

We carry some smaller and lighter tents that are single-walled - TarpTent Contrail. Not recommended for first-timers as they can be trickier to setup, and not suggested for use in really rainy areas, but if interested, check them out and read the details to see if they would work for you. We'll do our best to ship the item that you requested, however, sometimes we may ship you an equivalent item if we are currently out of stock on the item you specified.

We have lots of advice about the great outdoors including more information on tents and shelters for camping and backpacking such as how to choose the best tent and how to find and make a good camp site.
